Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice Mystery Quilt

Saturday, November 30, 2013

I love when others participate in mystery quilts and share their progress and finishes, but I can never seem to bring myself to cut into lovely fabric for an unknown turnout of a mystery quilt! Since I haven't been longarm quilting as much lately because my knees have been bothering me (I'm undergoing Euflexxa injections and hope they will help), I thought, why not take a chance on this mystery quilt? So these are the pretty fabrics I've chosen, a fat quarter bundle of an old line from Nancy Halvorsen called Garden Song. I needed a few more blues so pulled them from another old Nancy Halvorsen Christmas line (I forgot to photo the extra blues). Nancy's fabric lines tend to play nicely together color-wise and I really like the darker additions I found in my stash!

The quilt I'm making is from Bonnie Hunter's blog, Celtic Solstice (<-- clickable link). If you love scrappy quilts, check out Bonnie's site. Even if you don't, her site has a lot of amazing information AND she has a bunch of free quilt patterns. Bonnie's blog was the first blog I ever read, over a decade ago, and I still enjoy it to this day.

Below are pics of the blocks I made with the first "clue" for Celtic Solstice. I hope I can keep up with the clues!

I have a big quilt on the frame right now that I've been quilting a little at a time. I think a few more quilting sessions and it will be finished. It's a Christmas gift so I won't post any photos until January.

Hop on over to Bonnie's Monday Link-Up and see what others are using for their fabric choices!

  1. Your clue#1 blocks look great! I keep trying to decide whether I want to do Bonnie's QAL or try the Downton Abbey QAL that Ebony Love is hosting. Of course with the Celtic Solstice I can probably pull some colors from my stash but with the Downton Abbey quilt I need to go out and buy a lot of new fabric. Choices, choices. Have fun with this quilt .. it looks like it's going to very sweet with these fabrics.

  3. I've got that FQ bundle. Didn't cut it for ages but am using some of it in this mystery. With repros. Looks nice.

  4. It is a great way to use up odds and ends of fabric who h otherwise would sit on shelves and collect dust. I love your colors and can't wait to see what the next clue will be.

So just this week I picked a color palette very close to yours baby colors soft pink, blue, green, yellow and my neutral is Kona Snow
Your colors are brighter and I do like them , also had I seen your selection before I chose mine I most likely would have tried to be a copy cat
